JB Planning Associates have today submitted a mixed-use outline planning application on behalf of the Wansbrough Mill Development Company Ltd for the redevelopment of the former Wansbrough Paper Mill site in Watchet, Somerset.
Plans submitted to Somerset West and Taunton Council include the construction of up to 400 new dwellings including a mixture of housing and flats, live / work incubator units, a residential care village with up to 160 sheltered apartments and a 60 bed retirement home, a new local centre including an aparthotel with associated leisure facilities, an employment area providing up to 8,000 sqm of B1 and B2 floorspace, a visitor / interpretation centre, space for community facilities and a public car park.
The proposals have been shaped by responding positively to comments received during the two-day public consultation event held in April this year, as well as feedback received from members of the public and a number of pre application discussions with Council officers.
A key objective is the creation of new jobs through the construction of new business accommodation, a new local centre including an apart hotel and a residential care village.
Features such as a public car park and leisure facilities associated with the proposed apart hotel (including swimming pool and spa) have now been included following feedback from the public consultation event.
The submitted illustrative block masterplan has been informed by a careful study of the site and its constraints and opportunities.
Numerous watercourses and culverts run through the former mill which is partly within the flood plain. An existing culvert will be opened up, creating a new river through the site with ecological and landscape enhancements. New walking and cycle routes will also be created for the enjoyment of both new and existing residents.
The outline application includes a full suite of technical reports and information including an Environmental Statement.
The Council will now be consulting on the outline proposals with a formal recommendation to planning committee due later this year.
